Sita Karki works as Earth Observation Computational Scientist at Irish Centre for High-End
Computing and National University of Ireland Galway. Born and raised in Nepal, Sita pursued
her master’s degrees in environmental sciences and Geographic Information System from Idaho
State University. She holds a PhD degree from Western Michigan University in Geosciences. Sita
was awarded American Association of University Women (AAUW) fellowship in 2010.
She came from a typical middle-class family in Nepal where pursuing higher education was a
long struggle amid social disparities, severe economic problems due to political unrest that
lasted more than a decade in the country.
Sita Currently works at the intersection of industry and academia where she is constantly
working on ways to implement current technological advancements in the field of earth
observation and machine learning. Sita believes that education is one of the superpowers that
women can have especially in the case of developing countries where traditional social
structures are not designed to support women. She believes that continuous learning and the
habit of getting out of comfort zone are the only ways to keep up with the fast-changing world.
